How can you get your business in the press?

Would you love a bit of coverage in the local magazine or newspaper for your small business? Well that absolutely is achievable, and here’s how you can go about it…

What your local press will NOT be interested in (unless you’re happy to pay for the print space) is obvious marketing content. Forget about listing your USPs , sharing your mission statement or giving your elevator pitch.

Yes, you want to get these things across to readers, but you’ll need to SHOW NOT TELL with some authentic storytelling.

SO… think about what story you have to tell. It will need to be:

1) Human | Something in your story that readers can connect with. Perhaps overcoming adversity, helping others in need or celebrating joyful success.

2) Local | Specifically located in the region the newspaper/magazine covers

3) Relevant | A topic that the readers of that newspaper/magazine will connect with and that fits with the general style/content they typically share

4) Timely | Something of the moment that is new right now

5) Noteworthy | Something that sets you apart and couldn’t be said by every one of your competitors.

Here’s a few ideas:

💡 Are you celebrating a milestone? 10 years in business, first 1000 sales…

💡 Do you have something new to launch? A new product, a new team member in a senior position…

💡Are you doing something unusual? A new approach that challenges the norm…

💡Are you doing something community based? Supporting a charity, sponsoring a local event…

💡Can you give some advice? Try-it-at-home tips, professional advice readers can use…

Next step… get it written in a press release. I’ll do a post on that next week!
